Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 3 cups of flour, 
  • 1 teaspoon of salt, 
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar, 
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 
  • 1/2 cup (or 113g) of lard or butter, 
  • 3/4 cup of cold water

For the Filling:

  • 500g of beef, 
  • 1 large onion, 
  • 2 cloves of garlic, 
  • 1 tablespoon of oil, 
  • 1 teaspoon of salt, 
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, 
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cumin, 
  • 1/2 teaspoon of paprika, 
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped green onions, 
  • 1 egg for brushing

How to Make Beef Empanadas

Dough:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder. 
  2. Add the lard or butter and rub it into the flour until it forms tiny crumbs. 
  3. Gradually add the water, kneading the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. 
  4. Let the dough rest under a cover for 30 minutes.

Filling:

  1. Cut the beef into small pieces. Chop the onion and garlic. 
  2. In a large pan, heat the oil, add the onion and garlic, and sauté until golden. 
  3. Add the beef and spices (salt, pepper, cumin, paprika). Sauté until the meat turns brown. 
  4. Remove from heat and add the chopped green onions.

Assembly and Baking:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius. 
  2. Divide the dough into equal parts (about 12 pieces). Roll each piece into a thin circle. 
  3. Place a bit of filling in the center of each circle. 
  4. Fold the dough in half, forming a half-circle, and firmly pinch the edges to form the empanada. 
  5. Place the empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. 
  6. Brush each empanada with the beaten egg to give it a golden color. 
  7. Bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes or until golden. 
  8. Allow the empanadas to cool a bit before serving.
