How to Make Japanese Beef Croquettes

Step 1: Prepare the filling

  1. Cut 200 grams of beef into small cubes. 
  2. Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. 
  3. Sauté the beef until golden brown. 
  4. Add 1 finely chopped onion and 2 minced garlic cloves. Sauté until the onion is softened. 
  5. Then, add 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of ketchup, and 1 teaspoon of sugar to the pan. Stir and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes. 
  6. Allow the filling to cool.

Step 2: Make the dough

  1. In a deep bowl, combine 2 cups of boiled and mashed potatoes (about 500 grams), 1 egg, 2 tablespoons of breadcrumbs, and 2 tablespoons of flour. 
  2. Mix all the ingredients until you have a uniform mixture.

Step 3: Shape the croquettes

  1. Take a small amount of dough in your palm and flatten it. 
  2. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of the dough. 
  3. Close the dough around the filling and gently roll it into an oval-shaped croquette. 
  4. Repeat this process until you run out of dough and filling.

Step 4: Fry the croquettes

  1. Heat a deep frying pan with vegetable oil to 170-180 degrees Celsius (340-360 degrees Fahrenheit). 
  2. Carefully place the croquettes into the pan and fry them until golden brown on both sides. 
  3. Once the croquettes become crispy, remove them from the pan and place them on a paper towel to remove excess oil.
